Did William Branham prophecy that there would be an American pope?

The Prophecy?

In 1954, William Branham stated:

I believe, one of these glorious days, when this United Confederation of Church goes together, and the new pope is brought out of the United States and put over there according to prophecy, then they'll form an image like unto the beast.[1]

America - the two horned beast?

Notice that William Branham states that the prediction of the new Pope coming out of the United States was "according to prophecy." What prophecy is he referring to?

William Branham never prophesied that a pope would come out of the United States. He did not make a prophecy but rather referred to a prophecy that he thought was already in existence.

What prophecy was Branham referring to?

From our other articles on this website (see VICARIVS FILII DEI and Plagiarism), we know that William Branham read and plagiarized the works of Uriah Smith (1832-1903). Uriah Smith in The Prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation states:

The “two-horned beast,” by which the image is given power to speak and act, represents the United States of America, which is moving toward the formation of the image of the beast. The two-horned beast enforces the mark of the beast...[2]

The exercise of this power takes the form of causing the people in his jurisdiction “to worship the first beast,” the papacy...

What would be an image of the papacy? — Another ecclesiastical establishment clothed with civil power, in other words, a union of church and state.

How could such an image be formed in the United States? Let the Protestant churches be clothed with power to define and punish heresy, to enforce their dogmas under the pains and penalties of the civil law, and should we not have an exact representation of the papacy during the days of its supremacy? To be sure we would.[3]

This woman is explicitly called Babylon. Is Rome, then, Babylon, to the exclusion of all other religious bodies?—No, she cannot be, from the fact that she is called the mother of harlots as already noticed, which shows that there are other independent religious organizations that constitute the apostate daughters, and belong to the same great family.[4]

This is likely the prophecy that Branham was speaking of.

Branham got this wrong

Branham stated that the Assemblies of God had joined the "Confederation of Churches" or the "council of churches" (with the Roman Catholic church).

And I read the other day, even the Assemblies of God went into the Confederation of Churches.[5]

And the Assemblies of God has gone into the council of churches, which is a.... They just hooked theirself right up yonder with the old mother harlot. So every church organization comes from Rome. There's the mother of it. And I'm not a Latter-Day saint ... [6]

The Assemblies of God, the mightiest of all the Pentecostals, belongs to the confederation of church. She's just as much in the image of the beast as they are. Now you see Catholic?[7]

The Protestant churches, through the Council of Churches, is making a place where that ... all Protestant fellowship will have to be united. How many knows, or read of the great united building they got for the churches of the world? Sure. Up there now, just like the U.N. nations. And all of them are there, every one of them, even to the Assemblies of God.[8]

But this is simply not true. Their website states:

The Assemblies of God is not affiliated with either the World Council of Churches or the National Council of Churches.

And they have never been.

The real, true believers out of Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Nazarene, Pilgrim Holiness, whatever they'll be, will go together and cemented by the love of God, that'll make the body of the Lord Jesus Christ, all the believers. And agnostics and shallow-minded will be cast to one side; they'll go right on into the Confederation of Churches. And I read the other day, even the Assemblies of God went into the Confederation of Churches.[9]

Oh, now tonight the great capstone. But just a moment. I think we got a little bit more time here. I'd like to get to some other thing. I want to show you the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast, let's take Revelation 13, just a minute. Revelation 13:15, and just read what he's going to do. Revelation 13:15: And he had power to give life unto the image.... Now that is unto the Protestant churches. He had power because they made a image. The Protestant churches, through the Council of Churches, is making a place where that ... all Protestant fellowship will have to be united. How many knows, or read of the great united building they got for the churches of the world? Sure. Up there now, just like the U.N. nations. And all of them are there, every one of them, even to the Assemblies of God. They're there. They're there, see. It's dog-eat-dog.[12]
