William Branham taught that Jonah might or might not have been out of the will of God and the main God of Nineveh was a whale god because of the city's proximity to the ocean. A couple of things were certain. Nineveh was a port city on the ocean and was a city of fisherman.
But what does the Bible teach?

What does the Bible say?
Does the Bible tell us who the God of Nineveh was? Do we know where Nineveh was located?

Where was Nineveh located?
Nineveh was founded by Nimrod (Asshur), as the marginal reading of Gen. 10:11 states, and was situated on the eastern bank of the river Tigris, opposite the modern town of Mosul. It was about 250 miles in a direct line north of the rival city of Babylon.

When Nineveh became the capital of Assyria is not definitely known, but it is generally believed it was during the reign of Sennacherib. The prophecies of the books of Jonah and Nahum are chiefly directed against this city. The latter prophet indicates the mode of its capture. Nah. 1:8; 2:6, 8; 3:18. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria during the height of the grandeur of that empire, and in the time of Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, and Assurbanipal. It was besieged for two years by the combined forces of the Medes and Babylonians, was captured, and finally destroyed B. C. 606.

We can conclude that Nineveh was located on a river and was hundreds of miles from any ocean. Why did William Branham the prophet not know that?

Was the God of Nineveh a "Whale-God"
The Bible is clear who the god of Nineveh was.

Nisroch was the god of King Sennacherib, in whose temple at Nineveh the king was assassinated by Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons (see 2 Kings 19:37; Isaiah 37:38). Nisroch was the city god of Nineveh, the chief capital of the Assyrian Empire; scholars speculated that he was perhaps identical with the Assyrian god Nusku.

Why did William Branham insist on saying that the god of Nineveh was a "whale god"? Did he just make it up?

Quotes of William Branham
Nineveh was a port city
Oh, yes. God kept him alive three days and nights. And we find him then. And we was told that all the Ninevites had turned away from God and went to worshipping animals, which is a heathen trait, and they was… Most all around Nineveh, it was on the seashore, so the occupation was fishing. And the god of the sea was the whale. He was the largest specie in the—in the ocean, and that was the god of the ocean.

The people in Nineveh saw the whale spit out Jonah
I want to show you something now, show where God knows what He’s talking about. Now, the people of Nineveh… That was a big city about a half a million people, pretty near the size of St. Louis, Missouri. And they were heathens. They were in all kinds of sin. They worshipped animals, and idols, and everything, and they were—their occupation were fishermen. And so the whale was the god of the sea. So all of them was out about eleven o’clock fishing, all the fishermen pulling their nets out there in the sea, and the first thing you know, up come the sea god, the whale. Run up to the bank, licked out his tongue, and the prophet come walking right out on the bank. Sure they repented. God knows what to do. God knows how to do things to people who wants to believe. See? Jonah wasn’t out of the will of God. See, the whale god spit the prophet right out on the bank. Sure they’re going to believe his message. And there he come out.

Jonah, the prophet, was a sign. His sign was when he spit, the whale spit him out upon the bank, that was a sign. Them people were heathens, fished for a living. And they seen the whale-god come in, this god of the sea, and take the prophet and spit him out upon the bank, to give the message, and down the bank he went. There was the sign. Now the Voice was, “Repent or perish!” Before God struck that nation, to tear it to pieces and sink it beneath the sea, He sent a prophet with His Word. He gave a sign, a supernatural sign.

Jonah walked right out of the whale and started preaching in Nineveh
You know what God did? He must’ve put a oxygen tank or something in there. He kept that prophet alive for three days and nights, and took him on a ride, all the way across the ocean to Nineveh. Nineveh was a large city, many thousands of people. They were idol worshipers, and they worshipped gods, and their great god was the god of the sea, the whale. All of them were fishermen. Here they was out there pulling their nets, sinful as the United States is now, and the first thing you know, in come the whale (He was a god to them.), opened up his mouth, stuck out his tongue, and the prophet walked off like a gang plank. There come the god, spitting the prophet out. No wonder… See, God had to do it that way. God knows what He’s doing. No wonder they repented at the preaching of Noah—or Jonah. Because why? That he was… The whale god spit him out on the bank. The prophet walked right out of the whale’s mouth and begin to preach. Sure they repented. God does things in supernatural ways, His wonders to perform—certainly.

Top of Page
In a sermon in 1964, William Branham sought to tie in a lunar eclipse with the Pope's visit to Jerusalem:

:The last eclipse of the moon was a total eclipse. It waned to a total darkness in seven stages. In the seventh stage, the total darkness came as the Pope of Rome (Paul the Sixth) went to Palestine to make a holy tour of Jerusalem. He was the first pope to ever go to Jerusalem. The pope is named Paul the Sixth. Paul was the first messenger and this man goes by that name. Notice it is the sixth, or the number of man. This is more than a coincidence. And when he went to Jerusalem, the moon or the church went into total darkness. This is it. This is the end. This generation shall not pass away until all be fulfilled. Even so Lord Jesus, come quickly!

But is his connection justified by the facts? Are his facts correct?

What really happened
On December 30, 1963, there was a total lunar eclipse that covered western North America and eastern Asia.

From January 4–6, 1964, Pope Paul VI visited Amman, Jordan, Old Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. It was the first time a reigning pontiff had flown on an airplane, the first papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and the first time a Pope had left Italy in more than a century.

Was the lunar eclipse a sign?
It is interesting that the lunar eclpise could not be seen (it was not even partial) in either Rome or in Israel. One would have thought that if God was showing something supernatural in the heavens that he would have got the eclipse to cover at least Israel.

Was the timing supernatural?
The eclipse happened approximately a week prior to the Pope going to Jerusalem. One would also have thought that if it was truly supernatural that would have occured while the Pope was in Israel. Why couldn't God at least get that right?

Did the eclipse happen in seven stages?
A lunar eclipse does not happen in stages. It is an astromical event whereby the shadow of the earth is cast on the moon, causing the moon to grow dark. The shadow initially starts at one side of the moon and gradually covers the entire moon (in a total eclipse). There are no stages. There is simply a continuum of the shadow moving across the moon.

A more reasonable explanation
Was William Branham simply looking for something to vindicate himself? He even admitted he was looking for something that would do just that - ""There it is, just exactly, see, just what I've been looking for.". Why did he feel it was necessary to invent the "seven stages" of the eclipse? Was it to justify his doctrine of the seven church ages?

Quotes of William Branham
And isn't it strange that just before the pope took his journey to Jerusalem, that the moon in the heavens made a total blackout, just a few days before he took it, his journey. He's coming here also, you know, see. Now that's never been known, see. But what does it show? That, this, he's doing this to win fellowship as he met on the day after he come into Jerusalem, he met the Greek Orthodox hierarchy. And what does that reflect? Fellowship, they're wanting Protestants and Catholicism joining together, which they are doing and will completely do. And God reflected this to us, in the moon, of a total blackout. By His mercy and grace…

Did any of you see the paper where they took the pictures of the moon? I have it here. If it ain't a perfect image, leaving out the seventh age which is not yet, exactly the way I drawed by the Holy Spirit, the Church Ages. There's the six of them, the seventh is not finished yet. The six conditions of the moon, how in its brightness in the first church age; dark in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth; just the way the Holy Spirit let me draw them on the board, and then identified them with Hisself on the wall of the tabernacle, two years ago. The moon reflects itself, and science again picks up the picture of the, Church Ages, just as they picked up that Light yonder and put it in Life Magazine, of the opening of the Seals, of the revealing in the age of the seventh angel. In the days of his ministry, the seventh messenger, the mysteries of God, which all the mysteries has been along the ages, should be revealed, made manifest, it should be at that time. And He did it! His words don't fail. Isn't that a mysterious thing? God drawing in the heavens the same thing that they hold, same God let me draw on the blackboard, and then by Himself. That's three times He's perfectly identified it, and just before the pope goes into Jerusalem.

Which, that was the church, the moon is the church, represents the church. And before the church, the shadow of the world crosses the moon. And the shadow of worldlyism, the shadow of worldliness, worldly church, has swept across to black out the entire Light of the Bible. The world got in the Light of the reflection. Do you understand? The world crossed in the light of the moon, and blinded out the sun. And the reflection of the moon that's supposed to be giving light to the earth, it was blacked out. And It come in and drawed the pictures just exactly like It did, by inspiration, before it happened.

Now that, I believe, Sister Simpson, was the Tucson paper. I don't know if Sister Simpson knew… She didn't understand it then. She said, "I cut out some pictures for you, and some notes, out of the paper," handed it to me.

And I thought something strange. I went in there and picked it up, and looked at it, I said, "There it is, just exactly, see, just what I've been looking for." And there it was in the paper.

Sister Simpson might tell you what paper it's in, if you want to get a copy of it. [Sister Simpson says, "It's December the 28th."—Ed.] And—and what say? ["It's the evening edition of December the 28th."] Evening edition of December the 28th.

See, before he went to Jerusalem to block out its Light, or what access it does have. What time, position, and what rights It has to shine, now it's cutting It off altogether, for the last age, the seventh church age where she goes into darkness. What a great thing the Lord is telling us. In everything, It's never failed but what God in the heaven has declared it and told it, looked to it, and here has identified it and a-vindicated it, that it is the absolute Truth.

But speaking here, in 1933, of the pope taking his place out of, or coming out, rather, of Rome, and making a visit to the—the holy lands. He'll also come here. And the strange thing, is, a few nights before he left Rome, for the first time it ever was in history, the moon came down and went in total eclipse. Just that, what was it? Shadowing off the reflected Light of the Son. In this, he spoke to the Orthodox father; and they're all in agreement, "The pope does this for fellowship, good neighborly fellowship." Which sounds, to the natural ear, the most wonderful thing could happen. But to the spiritual ear, it's darkness. And how that we churches, we Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and Pentecostals, could ever join into such a mess as that, and knowing our Bible teaches us different! It's a marvelous thing to me, that how Spirit-filled man can set in places and say, "It feels spiritual to be in such a place." To me, it's horrible.

Now, I guess you got it here in Phoenix. If anyone… How many in here ever seen where I had them pictures drawed of the Church Ages? Raise up your hands. I guess… See how the Lord drawed them in the skies, the other night? Just exactly the way it's drawed up there at the tabernacle. Perfectly, exactly the way that the Holy Spirit gave it by inspiration, three years ago, at the Tabernacle, there it happened in the skies. "In the mouth of two or three witnesses, let every word be established." The Holy Spirit first moved by inspiration; I drawed them on the platform. Then He came down Himself and made His vindication of it, as the moon and the Light going out, going out, and to this Laodicea Age going into total darkness again. And here He comes down and vindicates it on the moon, just at the time that all the churches are going together in a consolidation, of the federation of churches.

Now we find out what made the moon reflecting the light. God showing, first, on the blackboard; next, by His Own Presence; then in the heavens He showed the sign. And then out of Rome went the pope, over into Palestine; which, to the ordinary eye, people screamed and fell on their faces, and worshiped the man. Not any more against him than I would be a minister that would join up with such. It's all the same spirit.

Did you see the moon black out, the other night, before the pope went over to Rome, from Rome to Jerusalem? Jerusalem, the oldest church; the moon is a type of the church, always reflecting the light of the sun, in the absence of the sun, and it blacked out. I drawed that on a blackboard here, three or four years ago, and showed the churches, in hundreds and thousands of homes across the nation. What was it? A shadow. The first time a pope ever left, to come back here, come in—in the name of Paul, and so forth, went down through those places; had to bless the river, to cross it, and so forth. What does the—the river need blessing?

You have astounding picture there, tonight, that's going in that book, of three years, how the Lord has let me draw it out on a blackboard, and show just how the Church Ages would fail, and when and how they would go up-and-down. And as soon as that was finished, that great Angel of the Lord, that Light, before practically as many people sitting here, come right on the side of the wall, standing there. And people fainting. And drawed it right out, with Itself, on the wall. Three years later, the moon darkened and went right out, just exactly, in the day… just before the pope, first pope, went to Rome.

Here is the sign in the sky. The last eclipse of the moon was a total eclipse.
Many times, here's what causes them to criticize on the Full Gospel people. Satan, you who bound this poor little woman to take her life, I come in this challenge of faith in the Name of Jesus Christ, claiming the gift of Divine healing ministered to me by an Angel. Come out from the woman through Jesus Christ's Name. Now… Amen.

Now, if—if you were sick and I said, "I have a gift of Divine healing." A gift of Divine healing is nothing but faith in Divine healing. That's all it is: have faith. Everybody have faith in Divine healing has a gift of Divine healing, 'cause that's all it is. Now, that don't make them a Divine Healer no more than it makes the man that believes in salvation a—a Divine Saviour.
There's a Luther, a Wesley, so forth, just right on down.

:God never did deal but with one person at a time. He never even had two prophets at the same time. One! God can get one man in His hand.

:"Now, God always uses a—a prophet, a man. If you use a bunch of man, you get different ideas; see, each man, two man. '"Never did He have two major prophets on the earth at one time."" He takes one, so the other one can take its place for another day, another message. He never has two, He has one at a time."

Jenx2016: /* What the Bible says about this question */

Top of Page
We received an email which asked this question:

:What are you offering as an alternative to the message that he has brought?

This is really another way of asking whether the Church, the Bride of Jesus Christ, needs a special message from God.

What the Bible says about this question
The Apostle Peter tells us this:

:May grace and peace be lavished on you as you grow in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord!

:I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love. For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately. But concerning the one who lacks such things—he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins. Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin. For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you.

So if we have everything necessary for life and godliness because of what Christ has given us, why do we need a message? Message people may say that it is because the church has fallen away, and, in many churches (including message churches), it may be the fact that the church is lukewarm. But Peter tells us exactly why this is the case: People don't make the effort to add to their faith as we are instructed in scripture. Those who lack such things are blind because they have forgotten how they were cleansed from their sins. That is why Peter calls us to make our calling and election sure.

The scripture is plain as Paul says:

: Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand.

William Branham pointed to himself as the only way to truly understand scripture but all he did was to create confusion and to create division within the body of Jesus Christ.

The church doesn't need the message of William Branham or any other message. What we do need is to focus on the message that is contained in scripture as Jude emphasizes:

:Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Apostle John also agrees with this:

:But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

So instead of studying William Branham's word and exalting his message over the Bible, his followers should simply read the Bible, pray and find a good church (there are a few still around).
Many followers admit that their "prophet" did make mistakes, but these were all minor. They also state that we must avoid examining those mistakes and simply look at when he was under the "anointing", when the "Angel" was standing beside him.

Some of his followers, having been exposed to several critical flaws in the fundamental teachings of William Branham, even acknowledge that the sermons themselves contain several errors, but the prayer lines were "God's Voice to us." So let us turn our attention to one specific prayer line.

Calling a person out of the audience - April 11, 1959
At a meeting on the evening of April 11, 1959 in a meeting in Los Angeles, California, William Branham calls out a person from the audience

:Right straight back, the back of this place here, about middle ways of this aisle, there's a little--there's a woman, and she's suffering with a high blood pressure. She--she's not from here, she a Finn. She's from Finland. If you believe, sister, you receive your healing. "Jumalan rauhaa," rise up to your feet and accept your healing and be made well. God bless you. "Kiitos Jesus." Hallelujah! What was I saying?

William Branham retells the incident in the next service
The next evening, April 12, 1959 (also in Los Angeles), William Branham relates what happened the previous evening:

:Visions to me are just like a trance. And they were telling me of a woman that I had called back in--somewhere in the audiences, and had told her that a certain affliction had gripped her. But she was--couldn't understand me because she didn't--she was from a--another country, a Finnish woman. And then the Holy Spirit, to show that He's no respect of person, spoke through here, and called her name, and told her to bless God. Spoke in a language that I didn't know, and called the woman, and give who she was, and something about to--the Lord's blessings upon her, something another, in Finnish language. I don't even know English, let alone Finnish. So it goes to show that God speaks in all the languages and all human beings belong to Him. How wonderful.

But is that what happened?

What actually happened
While William Branham described this event as an astonishing display of God's power to speak through his prophet in the Finnish language, any who examine the "supernatural" event are a bit shocked at how little "God" actually spoke.

But when you review the details of this event on the night prior to Branham's claim, we only find two phrases Branham spoke in Finnish, "Jumalan rauhaa," and "Kiitos". And during the course of these words coming out in the sermon, Branham claims not to have known what he was saying.

There is just one problem with William Branham's claim - He had been to Finland. And these words, which he claimed not to have known, were repeatedly used throughout his ministry when speaking to those who knew the Finnish language. Eight years earlier, in 1951, William Branham referred to his trip to Finland. Interestingly, he mentioned learning the exact words that he claimed to have came to him in an "unknown language" in 1959:

:Now, we were in Finland, or England; we flew to Finland right away to start. At Helsinki we had a marvelous congregation. The Finnish people are so lovely and sweet. And many times when I think about how poor they are there, and how much that we ritzy Americans have, we should be ashamed of ourself. That's--that's right. Those poor people... There's a Finnish woman come on the platform the other night. And I was trying to keep myself under anointing, but when she passed she said, "Jumalan rauhaa," that's "God's peace upon you." And I said, "Kiitos," to her, it means "thank you."

To be fair, we must give William Branham the benefit of the doubt. Some followers of William Branham claim that he suffered from a very poor memory, and that his many conflicting statements are a result of his inability to remember important facts. Did William Branham remember these words after having learned them in Finland? It would appear that he did. He continued to use them each time he encountered a Finnish-speaking person in a prayer line or on the streets:

:Your blessings still rest in Finland. God bless this woman, and may her letters cross the sea telling of her being healed. In the Name of Jesus Christ I ask it. Amen. Now, Jumalan rauhaa.

:[Finnish brother speaking: And that very great service with Brother Branham and his party was doing in Finland, it is still growing and bringing fruit for God's work. Praise the Lord."--Ed.] Amen. God bless you, brother there. So glad to get to see you again. God bless you. Jumalan rauhaa. God bless you. Let's say, "Praise the Lord," everybody. All the way from Finland.

:Is there another Finn in here? The other night someone hollered, "Jumalan rauhaa," at me, passing over the platform that was healed.

:As the Finns would say, many of them in here, "Jumalan rauhaa." That's "God's peace rest upon you."

:Oh, Jumalan rauhaa. God's mercy to the people.

:Anything that'll make a Finn put his arm around Russian and a Russian around a Finn, will settle every war. Jesus Christ is the answer. Yes, sir. They had nothing against one another. They wept and cried and hollered, "Jumalan rauhaa," that's "God's peace rest upon you."

:Amen. God bless you, brother. God be Jumalan rauhaa.

:And I was passing through here the other night, and the custodian said he was from Finland and his people was from Finland. I spoke a few words of Finnish to him. And I said, "Kiitos" and "Jumalan rauhaa." And he looked at me. "Kiitos" is "thank you," and "Jumalan rauhaa" is "God's peace be upon you." And so I think I'd speak a few words in German, and they'd be a whole lot of people understand me.

:Jumalan rauhaa. Now, the man cannot speak English. He's Finnish. But I'll make signs to him what's wrong, if God will tell me. You, preacher. Now, it's over. Jumalan rauhaa. Kiitos.

The only conclusion one can make
When William Branham stated that he spoke to a Finnish woman in a language that he didn't understand. He was telling the truth. But the truth was also that he did know three Finnish words and those were the only words he spoke.

But William Branham was deceptive:

#Although William Branham did not know the Finnish language, he did know 3 words.
#He gave away that he knew exactly what he said in Finnish when he told the audience that the "Holy Spirit" told her to bless God. Spoke in a language that I didn't know, and called the woman, and give who she was, and something about to--the Lord's blessings upon her, something another, in Finnish language.
##How did William Branham know she was Finnish?
##How did he know what the "Holy Spirit" said in an unknown tongue?
#When William Branhan asked the deceptive question - What was I saying? - he knew the answer.

Paul rejected this kind of deception:

:But we have rejected shameful hidden deeds, not behaving with deceptiveness or distorting the word of God, but by open proclamation of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience before God.

Was Paul referring to men like William Branham when he stated this?

:I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

The more difficult issue is the doubt that this incident casts over William Branham's entire discernment ministry. It is obvious that he lied about his "speaking in tongues". But how did he know that the woman was Finnish? Did he make that up too? Or, as some have supposed, did Billy Paul work the crowd as they entered prior to the service and simply supply his dad with the information. Did this information come from the prayer cards or from talking to people in the audience prior to them taking their seats? We will never know for sure but this kind of evidence throws significant doubt on an important aspect of William Branham's "supernatural" ministry.

Thanks to the former message minister who discovered this
We want to thank the former pastor of a message church for bringing this to the attention of the world.

We can only imagine how hard it must be for a pastor who has preached these things for decades. To have preached from the sermons is to have examined them. And to have examined them is to have encountered many problems such as this. To have preached them to their congregations in error is a huge burden to bear after leaving. It is a pastor's duty, as shepherd, to lead the sheep in the right direction.

After discovering these things, shepherds bear the burden of correcting the error. Thankfully, some of the pastors who leave the message are doing just that.

But what about the translators? What about those who are tasked with interpreting these contradictions? What about those who had to interpret "Jumalan rauhaa," and were fully aware of Branham's trip to Finland?

Do former translators suffer the same emotions as former pastors? Do those currently trapped in the message battle a "tug-of-war" in their minds as they translate that which they know is not true?
